killin’ time

While waiting for my day job to begin I’ve found a new project / time sponge. Most of my flight logs (circa 1975-1988) are pen and ink ledger books. So, now is a good time to update the media and bring the old archives into the new millennium. Using mouse, keyboard, and Excel spreadsheet to transpose the data items, line for line, is not only tedious, but some of the airports flown have been renamed, moved, closed and lost to residential expansion. I have found several online resources which help me reconstruct these old flights. Some private landing fields, crop duster strips or ranches are obscure and difficult to pinpoint. One such challenge was Las Cruces and its private Club de Caza y Pesca de Baja California resort. All of these places seemed matter of fact in my mind 25 years ago and were merely scribbled, short hand, into these old books. Today, however, some locations are lost to memory and the documentation limited. Diener and Peck Ranches, Jubil and Schwartz Farms — where did they go?

Once found, I post their geo-coordinates, importing all into a database on my server. Using a few lines of PHP, and the Google Maps API, dynamic code displays a nifty push-pin map. It’s a work in progress and so far this map project displays my first decade of flying. View the output [ here ].

After fifteen training days, without time off, I can literally powernap and see dials, charted data and performance minutia on the backside of my eyelids. Finally, a 2 hour verbal and then a 4 hour checkride culminates in a (successful) test of ability. An HS-125 type rating has been added to my air transport pilot certificate. Taking deep breaths now in anticipation of introduction to an actual machine and first flight, after a day or two off — hopefully.

The Portuguese State will buy FLYi Inc

Lisbon – A source from the department of transports said that the Portuguese state is very interested in buyFLYi Inc. The state company TAP -Transportes Aéreos Portugues could launch a takeover to FLYi Inc. This plan of the takeover of FLYi Inc is the same that TAP did with the Brazilian airlines VARIG. The same source said Portugal’s TAP will supported its plan to invest in debt-ridden American airline and keep the loss-making national flag carrier flying. The source said the Portuguese State could notifie tomorrow the Portuguese National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) that it was willing to waive the condition of a 75% minimum acceptance level to which its public offer for the acquisition FLYi Inc shares was subject, taking into consideration that the response received will be sufficient to develop the business project pursued through the takeover bid. The Portuguese State will launch a takeover bid for FLYi Inc with the payment of 1,5 euros for each of the that responded to the tender offer, this initial offer could reach the limit of price of 1,85 euros for each share of the american company. The same source said the deal would not affect Portugal’s public deficit and would allow FLYi Inc to maintain its domestic services.

Better start brushing up on that Portuguese!

Dealing with “Time on task”, “Circadian Rhythm” and “back side of the clock”. Decided to start off with a $4.99 breakfast buffet at Terrible’s (hotel and casino) but first — a brisk walk to the strip. The place looks different in the sunrise with fountains and glitter switched off. There’s the usual smokie crowd nursing drinks and still trying for that elusive good luck win but I was struck to find the place alive with regular people out pounding the sidewalks jogging. Personally, I’d save it for a natural wood or in this neck, a desert trail, but you’ve got to get it when you can. Got to avoid a morning cat nap. Will struggle until late afternoon supper and then siesta for our midnight show and the dreaded red-eye.

Las Vegas (baby!)

T’was my first flight out west, the co-pilot’s first line flight since training, a cabin packed including the company C.E.O (sampling the product) and the flight attendants are all wearing St. Patties Day lime green hair wigs. We’re 5 minutes prior and still no sign of the Gate Gourmet which could be critical since they have the mini liquor bottles and there’s a bachelor party onboard amid many other hopefuls. The other half of the crowd will likely snooze and conserve themselves for the “I Do” city. Fearless leader uses his operational authority to hold the flight for commissary. After all, he just finished making a very nice, long winded welcome PA going on about how nice the airline is… and how we have the most leg room and comfy leather upholstery and… The flightdeck crew can (will!) make the time up enroute. No pressure or anything 😉 Highball it! Las Vegas we are coming!

A briefing committed to memory: This will be a Cat IIIa approach using an RA based DH of 50′. We will need to see Cat III single, or better, on the FMA. When you see LAND on the FMA call “land green”. If it does not annunciate by 350′ RA then call “missed approach”. Altitude call outs will be automatic. At the 100′ call I will say “checked” and you will continue to monitor the FMA and your instruments. At the “minimums” call one of two things will happen. If I am able to visually verify the landing environment, I will say “landing” and the autopilot will autoland the airplane. If I am unable to verify the landing environment then I will push the thrust levers to TOGA and announce “TOGA GO-AROUND FLAPS” and the aircraft will execute a go around.

What is old is new again

The trees were wiped clean by Hurricane Andrew ’92 but the nature trail / sea wall loops that I explored just the same, were lush with sea grasses, palmettos, shrubs and native plant restoration. My jog route was landmarked by the Cape Florida Light house on bottom and No Name Harbour at the top boundary. Lots of warm sun. I had the idea to contact the realtor to find us a winter home 😉 but BOURGIRL sez, “it’s kinda high rent” here. Aw shucks.

Flew Normals 1 in the Airbus Sim today which included a raw data, hand flown approach to Washington Baltimore Intl. While this stage involves deep concentration, this is because we are still absorbed in understanding what does what when why and how. The mechanics of the beast will become instinctive after a period of time as we progress. We will get into additional routines and abnormals, that will make these early lesson plans look like piece o’ cake.

AB narrow body 1

Today started with a stress test, a 2 1/2 hour written exam, and several in our group had tummies doing flip flops. But, after we got rolling it was a routine validation of what we know that we already knew. We’d been studying the pure magic of system logic (a.k.a PFM) for most of December. Passing this milestone we were rewarded with the “dollar ride”, a 60 minute hop in the simulator. 30 minutes stick time, each. An intro flight that wet appetites and demonstrated the advanced protections that make our new bird the safest yet. The automation — impressive. WOW!

benchmark record

Punch out at 1845. Hustle from Terminal A to the Main Terminal and out through baggage claim. Jump on an employee bus for the ride to the North Lot. Sprint to my airport car, jump in and drive the 10 minute journey back to the crashpad. 1905, stuff my rollerboard collect my gear and race it out to the car reverse course. Wait for bus and climb in at 1922. Cruise through security at 1930 and ride the tram back to my departure gate by 1935 just in time to board the 2000 flight home. Whew!

sometime i crack myself up

Worn out cogs and rollers or a SNAFU with the paper tray, my briefing packet held a blank page sandwiched in amongst the other sheets with the data. I rifle through them as I advise my crew of the pertinent particulars until I reach the blank. With a perplexed look, I slide it out and wonder out loud if there was supposed to be something important printed there. Their minds race for few seconds but get traction when they figure out that I’m just messin’.
